Land Trust hires a new director

One of the Skagit Valley's conservation groups has made a new acquisition - but of a person, not land.

Skagit Land Trust last month hired Molly Doran to serve as the group's executive director.

Doran is the former associate operations director of the National Outdoor Leadership School, overseeing operations around the world. Although she worked from the school's headquarters in Lander, Wyo., she also supervised - and often visited - the school's branch in Conway.

The school runs environmental expeditions and training, focusing on teaching conservation.

Doran said her old and new jobs have a lot in common.

While working for the school, she did a lot of overseas work that required close attention to community relationships, she said. The same principle applies when working for conservation in Skagit County, she said. "I really enjoy the community relations aspects of this job," she said.

Skagit Land Trust owns or has easements on about 3,000 acres in Skagit County. The most high-profile land it protects is 3.5 acres of heron habitat on the largely industrial March Point near Anacortes.

Martha Bray, who had been executive director, left that job to become the group's conservation director, a position more in line with her interests, according to Molly Smith, the group's administrative assistant.
